Law of Attraction and How Things Are Right Now
Odds are fairly good that if you’ve come across this site, you have heard about the Law of Attraction at least in passing. (A lot of the resources I mentioned in my previous post are related to the concept of the Law of Attraction if they don’t talk about it directly.) Basically, the Law of Attraction is that we attract everything in our lives to us through our thoughts. That means the wonderful things and situations and people and the hard or discouraging things and situations and people are in our realities because we drew them here with the things we think about. The three steps to the Law of Attraction are:
- Ask (which you cannot help doing–asking is having a desire)
- Let it go (the universe does this part, don’t worry about how)
- Allow your desires into your life (this means be happy and content and expect that they will come)
The idea that we are entirely responsible for the things in our lives is a wonderful and frustrating idea. On the one hand, if we train ourselves to expect only good–only prosperity, only good luck, only happiness, only laughter, only love–we can have all of those things all the time. On the other, most of us are not used to expecting only good, but we are used to blaming others for the negative things in our lives. When I learned about the Law of Attraction and when I talked with my friends and family about it our first reaction was a mixture of wonder and anger. We were excited about the possibility of drawing happiness and all the things we want to us, but we weren’t used to processing the bad things in our lives as a function of what we thought.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately as I’ve been reading books and listening to people, and a huge step in maintaining happiness as a daily practice is by finding contentment in how things are right now. By affirming statements like “I’m in debt” “I can’t find a job” “If only X happened, I could be happy” you are reinforcing the things you aren’t satisfied with and postponing your happiness.
So we look around houses and they need to be cleaned, and we think about things we feel compelled to do but can’t quite make go and wonder: How do I find contentment with all of this?? The answer I’ve discovered is that we can start with things that actually do give us contentment and then look at life through eyes of anticipation.
Whenever I’m feeling blocked or scared or overwhelmed, I try to focus on the things in my life that give me joy. My cats, my husband, my mother, the resources that have been falling into my life, the TiVo, the moment when I really hear something I need to hear. I think of times when I was really in the flow of life and felt that nothing could go wrong and try to recapture those feelings.
Once I’m feeling good and more positive about the blessings in my life, I anticipate the change and fulfillment of my desires instead of focusing on the things I’d like to change. By anticipation, I don’t mean things that will eventually come in the future, I mean things that are coming into my life right now. The important part, I’ve found, is maintaining that sense of happiness and contentment–if worry creeps in, interrupt the worry with thoughts of anything that make you happy. (The Secret Smile is a great way to get in touch with happiness.)

Two things…
1. If I had to sum the entire thing up, it’s that the Law of Attraction
is all about alignment. You’ve got to do the “work” if you want to
bring something info your life.
This is where I think people mess up, which gives the entire thing the
“MLM/Amway” kind of vibe. You can’t just sit around eating junk food
and watching reruns and expect to live on the beach…regardless of what
the infomercials say.
People like Joe Vitale are out working. Bob Proctor is out working.
James Ray is out working.
2. I found a FREE book (yes, FREE) that helped me figure out all of
this. http://www.receivethebook.com/ has it and it’s well worth the read.
And like I said, it’s FREE. So you can’t argue that the guy is trying
to take advantage of people looking for a “magic pill” or whatever else
I’ve been hearing over the last 2-3 weeks since this thing hit Oprah.

Thanks for your resource Tim. I agree with what you’re saying, but only up to a certain point. I think that if people really believe they could manifest their dreams by watching tv, it would happen. I don’t think anyone actually does believe they can accomplish anything by doing that though.
The real trick is believing that things are coming into our lives now–living the life of abundance even if it’s not physically there yet, reaching for joy in every moment, and truly believing we deserve the things we want. I do not believe that we have to struggle or “work” hard to get the things we want–if we live a life of joy, the “work” we do isn’t really work because it energizes and renews our passion.
To take this to a silly extreme, if my life passion was watching TV and I truly believed I could make money doing it, I would find a way to do just that. I do take your point though–we need to take action towards our dreams for them to happen.

Great info.
I watched the Secret DVD a few months ago and got another book on Law of Attraction,
but it didn’t really start happening for me until I wrote down my intentions. I found that to be
VERY powerful.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0975436171/ is a book I just got, which makes
planning out your Law of Attraction goals easy. Just fill in the blanks and you’ve got a road
map to follow. Has been working well so far.
